You care for your team, so you want to give them a promotion and you want to give them high praise over their work.
But if they turn in terrible work, you cannot reward them– even if they insist it’s amazing.
Encourage them, coach them, give them training– show them how to do the task properly.
You know they are capable and want them to succeed– and the quickest way to prevent that from happening is to level them up without them having earned it.
If you do, other team members will see this– which shows them you don’t honor excellence or have standards.
Give your people positive encouragement and help as much as you can– but keep your standards high.
This is from 20+ years of management experience– mistakes that I’ve made myself.
