People make mistakes all the time, myself included, as a normal part of testing and growing.
But what is something we fire people for is attitude— how they respond after having made a mistake.
Are they coachable or are the defensive?
Are they accountable or do they try to blame others?
Do they clearly understand what went wrong or do they insist everything is just fine?
Are they solving problems or are they creating problems? Skills you can teach, but attitude you cannot.
If you’re hiring for the long-run, don’t worry about their skills or even the little mistakes that happen along the way.
The right people will learn quickly and respond positively to your feedback.
Find companies that encourage team members to experiment and fail gracefully, since that’s how we all learn.
Don’t penalize people for trying, even if they fail the first few times.
